Statement from Longtown Mountain Rescue Team – BBMC Incident, Saturday 10th May 2025

It is with great sadness that Longtown Mountain Rescue Team can confirm that during Saturdays Big Black Mountains Challenge, a participant required urgent medical attention after being found unresponsive on the ridge.

Event participants and members of the public provided immediate first aid before Mountain Rescue personnel arrived on scene, supported by rapid response from Coastguard and Air Ambulance helicopters.

Despite the best efforts of all involved, the individual tragically passed away.

We would like to sincerely thank those who acted so quickly to assist, including fellow participants and emergency responders.

The team has been doing all it can to support the individual’s family, friends, and others affected by this deeply distressing incident. We ask that their privacy be respected at this time.

We understand this event may have been upsetting for those who witnessed or were involved in the response. If you’ve been affected, please seek support through your GP or organisations such as the Samaritans, available 24/7 on 116 123.
