EQUIPMENT

PERSONAL -
OPERATIONAL KIT LIST

Every operational team member, must be wearing or carrying the following items of clothing or equipment on the hill whether or not a Call Out or Exercise regardless of summer or winter.
It is no good to you in the car.

  • Boots (suitable for crampons where appropriate)
  • Gaiters
  • Water & windproof jacket
  • Water & windproof salopettes or overtrouser
  • Duvet jacket or fleece jacket
  • Hat &/or balaclava
  • 2 pairs of gloves &/or mitts
  • Waterproof overmitts
  • Compass (Silva Type 4 or equivalent)
  • Map preferably waterproof (see page 2)
  • Casualty card
  • Waterproof notebook & pen
  • Personal first aid kit (emphasis - Personal - it is not to replace or supplement the Team Kit)
  • Whistle
  • Penknife
  • Watch
  • Money (for phone / tea)
  • Bivi bag (plastic or breathable)
  • Sunglasses &/or goggles
  • Sun Cream
  • Head torch complete with spare bulb and batteries for 14 hours
  • Lightsticks or strobe
  • Climbing helmet (for helicopter and steep ground work)
  • 2 x 8ft tape slings
  • 2 x screw gate carabiners
  • Spare clothes - complete base layer including socks, hat and gloves / mitts
  • Spare boot laces
  • Food & on the move nibbles
  • Emergency food for 24 hours (High calorific value ie not 4 Mars bars)
  • Fluids in a flask &/or water bottle (1.5 litres min) (Platypus or equivalent preferable)
  • Rucksack (55 ltrs minimum - 60 ltrs preferably) with a waterproof liner

  • 1:25 000 Outdoor Leisure 12 Brecon Beacons Central and Western area (Waterproof)

Desirable
  • 1:25 000 Outdoor Leisure 14 Wye Valley and Forest of Dean (Waterproof)
  • 1:25 000 Explorer 14,151,152,166,187,188,189,200,201,202 & 214


The above items are of equal importance and in no particular order. Duplication of equipment is also to assist possibly other team members and or casualty. Members should try and concentrate wherever possible on carrying the above kit whilst aiming for minimum weight. Remember that you will have to carry team kit so don’t overfill your rucksack with personal extras.


ADDITIONAL ITEMS TO HAVE AVAILABLE IN THE CAR

  • Sleeping bag (you may have to stay out overnight)
  • Climbing sit harness
  • Prussik loop
  • Ice axe
  • Crampons (suitable for winter boots)

A Call Out can be at any time, always have your kit 'hill ready'.
